War is no laughing matter, men; unless of course it’s an excellent 3D recreation of certain sections of war available as a fine freemium. Lock and load - Dubble-ya Dubble-ya Two is back on, Marine!
War-based console kill ’em ups like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty have been mining the more famed fire-fights of World War II for a long time now, drawing an – no pun intended – army of fans like few other gaming genres. However making the successful move to the smartphone has been more hit and miss than the Siege of Malta and more overly lengthy than the Battle of Okinawa, but it looks like we finally might have made it.
Looking every bit like a console-quality campaigner from the opening barrage of bullets, this third person shooter is a run, duck and cover all-action adventure that takes you on a tour of France, tackling it trenches, taking back its towns, and blowing the begorrah out of its beaches in a bid to snatch Gaul back from the galling Germans.
Combining excellent action with 145 missions across five campaigns, mostly you’ll be ducking behind cover before popping up, targeting and hitting the Hun before they hit you using nice, uncluttered tap and slide controls to take the main target down before charging headlong to the next mission, when only side to sides and a jump button will help you avoid obstacles and stop you stepping on a mine.
A freemium title, upgrades are available via in-app purchase, but Glu have been good enough to let you just about play out its glorious game without them… but if you want to get the most out of it, break out the war-chest, because the big guns don’t come cheap.
THE BOTTOM LINE
App excellence from some developers of distinction, Frontline Commando: D-Day looks and plays so impressively it could well have been a big console title. As it is, in-app purchases not-withstanding, this is destined for Android greatness.
