On this week’s Gadget Lab Podcast, the gang shows off Apple’s newest iPad and takes a look at some seriously hardcore gadgets as part of our Month of Badass Gadgets.
First up, reviews editor Michael Calore and staff writer Christina Bonnington fondle Apple’s latest iPad. Arguably its most impressive feature is its 2048×1536 “Retina display,” essentially Apple marketing speak for super pretty. We also take a look at its improved 5-megapixel camera, which makes the tablet a better tool for photo and video creation. Unfortunately, a nicer camera doesn’t make snapping photos with a metal slab any less awkward.
Next, Michael is joined by Gadget Lab intern Nathan Hurst, who brandishes an insane flashlight called the LED Lenser x21. It can shine with the force of 1000 Lumens, and costs $500. Next, Nathan shows us the Gerber Multi-Plier 600 DET, a plier-like multi-tool that includes a (wait for it) C4 punch — you know, for setting off explosives. Other more typical multi-tool functions include a knife, scissors, and screwdriver. Lastly, Hurst pulls out a Smith & Wesson tactical pen. Not only can you use it to scribble down notes and reminders, you can actually use it to defend yourself.
The month of badass gadgets isn’t over yet though, so stay tuned to check out more crazy gear.
