Galaxy has rocketed up the Android Market download charts to become one of the most popular free downloads for Google’s smartphone OS. While it’s not quite clear what distinguishes this puzzler from its many rivals, you’ll certainly get plenty of fun from this throughly enjoyable app.
Long time Android addicts may have encountered the excellent shape splicing app, Slice It!, which perfected the puzzle formula for kids and adults through its sheer simplicity. If you could comprehend what a hexagon or a diamond looks like, you could play Slice It!
Galaxy takes that shape-based formula and inverts it so instead of chopping up objects, you’re tasked with drawing them. The snag is you’ve got to create each shape in one movement so all its corners connect together. Sometimes this is a doddle, sometimes it’s extremely tricky indeed.
To cater to the range of players who are no doubt already hooked on Galaxy, the app contains three different gaming modes across 200 levels. Challenge scales each puzzle’s difficulty according show many you’ve completed, Arcade allows you to build up a score depending on how long you take to finish drawing a shape and Time Attack is a race against the clock to complete as many puzzles as possible.
Even the universe’s most docile extra terrestrial would understand how to use Galaxy and for that reason we found ourselves getting hooked on this app despite it’s steadfast refusal to bring anything new to the Android party. Sometimes, it’s easy to underestimate the value of good old fashioned accessibility.
While Galaxy is by no means our favourite app download, we can certainly understand why a huge amount of smartphone owners feel that way.
The Bottom Line
A simple and addictive Android puzzle app which is suitable for all ages.
