While the Android 4.3 update is one of the most anticipated updates for Samsung Galaxy S3 owners, it is not free of problems and bugs. Many users already posted their concerns on online forums and since we have an open mailbox for our readers, we too, were able to receive a lot of emails regarding problems they experienced.
One of the problems we received has something to do with Galaxy S3 contacts. According to our reader, after updating this phone to Android 4.3, some contacts display the email address instead of the name of the person. At first glance, you could almost believe it to be a bug—well, it’s not.

Hello, I recently updated to android 4.3 and immediately noticed that the email address is displayed instead of the person’s name whenever I try to use the text messaging. I deleted the user from my contacts and recreated the same user but get the same issues even after clearing the cache for this application. My device is a Samsung Galaxy S3 i747. Any assistance will be appreciated.
For this problem, here are the things you should do to fix it:
Check for duplicate contacts. Take note of the contacts that display email addresses instead of names and go through each one of them to check if there are duplicates in your contact list. Delete duplicates if you can find some. This procedure is all you need to fix this issue for as long as the problem is with duplicate contacts. However, if you don’t want to delete any of your contacts, you can attempt to merge the duplicates with original ones. Here’s how…
Return to Home screen.
Tap Apps and tap on Contacts.
Tap the Contacts tab.
Tap on the contact you want merged.
Tap the Menu key.
Select Join Contact from the pop-up menu.
Now tap on the contact you want to merge.
All done. The duplicate contact will be merged with the original one as a single contact.
Turn off sync. If there are no duplicate contacts on your list, perhaps there are some in your Google Account. For you to check if it were the case, try to turn off sync on your phone and try calling or texting the contact. This procedure could fix the problem or point you to another step to fix it. As to the latter, you need to log into your Google Account that is setup on your phone.
Click the Gmail drop-down located on the upper-left corner of the screen.
Now try to see if you can find duplicate contacts and delete them if necessary.
Turn sync on your phone and see if the problem persists.
Clear Contacts Data and Cache. One reason why this procedure comes last even if we know it is most likely to resolve this issue is because the owner may end up losing all his contacts. Doing the previous procedures would ensure your contacts are in order on your Google Account. Before doing this procedure, however, it is recommended you sync your contacts with your account and after that, follow these steps:
From your Home screen, tap the Menu key.
Tap Settings, then Application Manager.
Swipe twice to the left to choose All tab.
Find Contacts and tap on it.
Tap Clear Cache, then Clear Data.
Go back to Home screen, tap Apps and launch Contacts.
If there are no contacts available, make sure syncs are turned on.
Factory Reset. If all of these procedures fail, bring the phone back to its original settings but make sure you back everything up. You will lost all your important data when you do this, so beware.
