Samsung's Galaxy S3 is outselling Apple's iPhone 5 in the UK, according to new figures
Comparison site uSwitch has reported that Samsung's Galaxy S3 outsold Apple's iPhone in September in the UK. It should be noted that those figures don't include any phones that sold unlocked from Apple, or any other SIM-free versions. Not only did it take a backseat to the S3, but the site places the iPhone 5 at number five on its hot list.
At first glance it's easy to wave the reigning flag for Samsung's S3, but aren't these figures just a little bit misleading? Let's take a closer look. The S3 has been on the market since May. That's a decent chunk of time for a company to rack up sales and a loyal following. To be fair, these numbers represent the month of September -- but even then, Apple's iPhone 5 doesn't have a fair shot here; the handset didn't hit store shelves until Sept. 21.
And if we're taking pre-orders into account -- which didn't become an option until Sept. 14 -- that's still a ridiculous gap in time to be staging a comparison against the two handsets. Or is it?
Industry watchers and Apple fans alike have come to expect an extremely high turnover rate with the newest iPhone. Apple's iPhone sales typically spike during the first few days of availability, and while it still managed to sell a record-breaking five million iPhone 5 units in just three days, that still wasn't enough to trump Samsung's S3 sales in the UK.
But maybe it's not really about popularity, or even a preference for one smartphone manufacturer over the other. Like we mentioned, the iPhone 5 was in the number five spot on the hot list, trailing behind the S3; Galaxy Ace; Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 4S. So, perhaps it's the simple fact that the average smartphone buyer would rather score a sweet deal and save some dough instead of stressing out over keeping up.
