Problem #1: Galaxy S5 infected by virus
Very slow performance, Chrome pops up at random times & loads different websites (sometimes to a site with a black background & green letters & numbers, & a window saying my Android device has a virus.) The Play Store randomly pops up sometimes to different apps like Uber. After putting in my password to unlock my phone sometimes it will freeze, blackout, & I would have to do it again several times or after a couple times of trying it would completely stop working & only my background will show for a couple minutes.
My battery gets hot faster now. Very laggy when opening apps or even just sliding through home pages or the apps. When I press on push notifications for apps like Pandora, Kik, or messages it won’t go to the app or it will take some time to get there & show a blank white screen. Running safe mode seems to fix all these problems for now. — Jennifer
Solution: Hi Jennifer. If you haven’t yet browsed through our previous posts about this issue, the most effective solution at your disposal right now is factory reset. The phone is most likely infected with unwanted software that takes controls of some functions including that of loading some apps. While it’s hard to determine whether your personal data has been compromised at this time, we are certain that an adware has penetrated your phone’s defenses forcing it to load apps you don’t intend to open, or showing you ads. Wiping your phone clean is thus imperative. That your phone appears normal when in safe mode is a strong indicator that you have an issue with one of your apps.
Once you have performed a factory reset, you have to ensure that you don’t re-introduce the malware by carefully installing apps you trust. If you have lots of apps installed, it can be tricky what NOT to install. Our general rule in this case is by sticking to official and known reliable apps only. If you have games you don’t play anymore, don’t re-install them. Same for any other apps you seldom use. Doing so will help you isolate the problem later on. Viruses and other forms of malware find their way to a device through app installation. If you are careful with what you install, you will most likely avoid getting viruses.
Here are the steps to perform a factory reset:
Power down the Galaxy S5.
Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Problem #2: Contacts app stops working after deleting some Google apps
By trying to make space on my device, I deleted some Google apps which I thought would be meaningless on my phone. The phone is working fine only that I can’t access my contacts anymore.
When I try to access my contacts, it says: “update of yours contacts in progress…” but in never loads. When I go into my text messages all my conversation are shown but only with the numbers.
All my contacts seems to be impossible to reach even by Dropbox, Gmail which I downloaded the zip file which contains nothing. Thanks for helping me! — Joe
Solution: Hi Joe. Some Google apps have critical functions in an Android device and removing them off your phone can cause a sequence of problems to other apps. Since there’s no way to re-install all of them right now, consider doing a factory reset. This will ensure that the device will regain the complete list of needed Google applications again. Steps are provided above. Make sure to create a backup of your personal data (photos, videos, messages, etc) before proceeding.
Problem #3: Yahoo mail not working on Galaxy S5
For a couple of days the device didn’t connect on the Yahoo e-mail. The messages were coming in, with notifications, but first I could not send any messages except when I was on Wi-Fi, not when I was using mobile data. Then it didn’t work even on Wi-Fi. Last night I kept receiving the notification “the connection to the server failed”.
At my husband’s suggestion, I erased the yahoo e-mail account in order to configure it again. Only that this is not possible anymore. The error message when I try to configure the account is “the account can’t be configured. The authentication failed”. I have erased cache files for e-mail. And then I also erased data for e-mail. Nothing works. Please help me. — Ileana
Solution: Hi Ileana. Are you using the stock or native email app or Yahoo’s own email app? If you are using the stock app, try wiping the cache partition then do a factory reset (Steps provided above) if that won’t fix the issue. Here’s how to delete the cache partition:
Turn the phone off.
Press and hold the following buttons together: Power, Volume Up and Home.
Release the buttons once the Android system recovery menu appears.
Use the Volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option.
Press the Power button to confirm selection.
Select Reboot System Now option after deleting the cache. Wait for the phone to reboot.
If you are using the Yahoo email app, try to re-install it first, then reconfigure your account again. If you will receive the authentication error again, that means that you may not be entering the correct credentials. Try logging in to your Yahoo webmail account using a browser to check if you have the correct username and password.
Problem #4: Swiftkey keyboard on Galaxy S5 not working properly
I have used SwiftKey keyboard for a long time now. Suddenly i started having problems that their technical folks have been unable to help with so i thought I’d try you.
When i try to long press a letter key to select one of the special characters, the keyboard instead inserts a word or a set of characters that begins with the corresponding letter. So for example if i try to insert a + sign i might get “Hu” instead. It works properly only on the keys that, when i long press, have several characters to choose from. If there’s only one character then the problem appears.
This is really annoying me since i am devoted to the SwiftKey keyboard, much searching hasn’t found any other one with the same features. I have Uninstalled & reinstalled, deleted the app entirely from my apps & re-added, deleted my personal data from the app, all with no luck.
I’m hoping against hope that you may have some ideas.

Solution: Hi Katrina. If you’ve contacted the app’s developer but they themselves couldn’t solve the issue, we doubt if we are in a better position to help you at all. You have apparently done all the basic troubleshooting a user can do on his or her part. Some of the common reasons for app malfunction issues include incompatible patches or updates (either for an app or for Android) and problem third party apps.
If you noticed that the issue started after updating something, try to uninstall the update (if it was for an app) or do a factory reset (if it was an Android update).
You can also boot the phone in safe mode to see if one of the installed apps is to blame. To do that, just follow these steps:
Turn the device off.
Press and hold the Power key.
When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
Problem #5: Widgets on Galaxy S5 do not update
Since I updated my phone from Android 4.4.2 to Android 5.0 I’ve been getting some issues. The first and main issue is that the widgets on the home screen does not update at all. Even when i click on them nothing seems to be changed until the phone is rebooted. e.g If i turn my flash on from the flash widget on the home screen there would be no changes on the widget but the flash would work fine, the same thing happens with every widget like Alarm, Flipboard and many more.
The second issue is that whenever I plug in my headphones there pops up “Unfortunately, Recommended app has stopped working.” This error pops up twice when the headphones are plugged in.
These issues just started happening since the update from 4.4.2 to 5.0. — Kemosabe
Solution: Hi Kemosabe. The phone’s system cache may be to blame here. Try wiping the cache partition and do a factory reset if nothing works. Steps are provided above.
Problem #6: Galaxy S5 won’t download any app content
I brought the phone BRAND NEW about 3 months ago and installed all of my back-up info from my Google account and everything seemed fine. Once I got all my apps re-installed and really began using the phone i noticed that “The Chive” app would not load completely, so i just assumed it was a problem with the app, but then i noticed other apps weren’t functioning properly either (including Facebook, SnapChat, 9Gag, and Zedge (ringtones/wallpapers)); it seems to be related to being able to download content for the app to function.
For example my Zedge up will fully open and operate but when i select a ringtone or wallpaper to download it simply says “download failed”. It does the same if i attempt to save images from Facebook App or just from the Chrome Browser. Oddly enough however I am able to save images through the default internet browser. I have already attempted to clean out caches and have also done a full factory reset, but with no change. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. — Josh
Solution: Hi Josh. This is an interesting case and we haven’t heard anything like it. We know though that all download functions are tied to Google Services Framework. This is the only thing that we can think of at this point that might resolve the issue so it’s good if you can troubleshoot it. Try doing these actions in sequence: Force Stop, Clear cache, Uninstall updates, and Clear Data. To do them, just follow these steps:
Go to Settings.
Proceed to Applications.
Select Manage Applications.
Tap the All tab.
Find Google Services Framework and tap it.
Do the action sequence.
