Apps problems are nothing new and it can be expected that everyone with a smartphone encounters hiccups due to them from time to time. With hundreds of thousands of apps available for download and installation, it’s no wonder that requests for assistance from Android community don’t seem to dry up.

Problem #1: Galaxy S5 gets popups when opening applications and browsing the internet
I keep getting pop up ads while in other applications, and when using the Internet (I use Chrome), sometimes when I search and click a link or type in the URL directly it redirects me to a page telling me I have a virus or I’ve won something.
The other types of ads that I get (both when on other apps and browsing) are either overlays that keep the screen I’m currently on in the background, or it appears in a new window (usually as a video) most of the time when I click the multitasking button when these happen it shows these as a separate app window with a red bar at the time, but there’s no label on it.
However, once it crashed and the notification got said “system UI has crashed.” I’ve tried apps that are suggested on forums to find the issue but none have helped. I’d really like to fix this especially since not all of the ads are PG.

Solution: Hi Alison. We know that average users sometimes struggle to remain safe online. Your phone appears infected with a malware right now so the best thing that you can do to get rid of them is doing a factory reset. This will not only clean up the phone but will also be good for the system in general if you haven’t done it for a long time. Here’s how to do it:
Power down the Galaxy S5.
Press and hold the Volume Up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Important: Factory reset will wipe everything from your phone’s internal memory so make sure to back your personal data (photos, videos, contacts, etc) up.
After performing a factory reset, the next best thing to do is to prevent the virus or malware from coming back. While there is no surefire way to do that, start by making sure that you are not installing dubious apps. Least popular games or apps tend to make money by inserting illegal codes in a device so they can modify the operating system and allow popup ads or malicious software to be installed at a later date. Install only official and trustworthy apps. If you are not sure if a game is safe or not, better to err on the side of caution.
Problem #2: Unable to install AT&T Android 5.1.1 update
I have downloaded and tried to install the AT&T Android 5.1.1 update numerous times. The update downloads with no problem. The update then continues. The phone does a restart ok and then starts to update. The update quickly stops and says failed. I then tried Samsung Kies. It says that I already have the latest software, which is 5.0. I then tried Samsung Smart Switch with the same result as Kies. I went to the Best Buy Samsung Pro today 11/13. He plugged my phone into his system and did various checks and procedures. He could not find any problems. I have just shy of 5GB free space. He couldn’t attempt to install the AT&T 5.1.1 update because it is not in their system yet. My wife has the same phone with the same problem. This seems like an unsolvable problem, Help!!! — Eric
Solution: Hi Eric. We are not aware of this installation issue among AT&T users right now and this is the first time we’ve heard of this problem reported in our blog. We will look into this and will update this post later if something comes up. The issue might be a unique bug from AT&T’s APK that prevents the installation.
Try wiping the cache partition and download the update again. Doing this procedure is usually recommended after an update but can also be an effective measure to do in your case. To delete the cache partition, just follow these steps:
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
Press the Volume Down key to highlight wipe cache partition.
Press the Power key to select.
When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.
If nothing changes after wiping the phone cache, make sure to call AT&T and tell them about the problem. They are sometimes the last people to know problems about their products so you are not only helping yourself but also the AT&T community if the cause of the trouble is indeed a bad code from AT&T’s side.
Problem #3: Galaxy S5 cannot no longer open documents and files
I’ve had my phone for 1.5 years now. Up until a week ago, I could open attachments on my email no problem. Out of the blue, I can no longer open attachments. I use my Hotmail account on my phone. I’ve tried different apps to open them. Polaris Office 5, Adobe Acrobat, Drive PDF Viewer… but it’s not only documents. I can’t open attached videos or photos. Even old emails with attachments that I’ve previously opened, I can no longer open them. When I try to open it in Polaris it says “document cannot be opened.” When I try to open it in Adobe Acrobat it says “the document is empty.” But I know the document is not empty because I’ve previously opened it on my phone! I’ve tried deleting my email account and re-adding the account a few times. I still can’t open any attachments. I tried forwarding the emails to my Gmail account and using that app. I can’t open the attachment in the Gmail app either. I cleared the cache by following your directions on another post (holding down power, home, and volume button, etc…) I’ve tried removing the battery. Please help me — Lauren
Solution: Hi Lauren. Your phone’s operating system does a complex set of tasks when trying to open or load something. If this process is interrupted due to missing components or files, your best bet is to simply do a factory reset to force the phone to recreate the necessary set of files and perform the task perfectly. Steps are provided above on how to perform a factory reset.
Problem #4: Galaxy S5 redirected to Google Play Store
The issue first started with my mother’s phone, who has the same phone as I do. She would complain about adds from the Play store popping up when she would first turn on her phone, go to contacts, text or anything else. These apps would come up as if she was going to download them.
She would randomly be texting it would stop that and go to the Play Store to an app…then the problem started on my phone. I never really have apps but I now have Candy Crush, Shopular and an app to download songs. I’m not sure when the problem started.
I will swipe my phone to turn on and it takes me to the internet and says from Facebook that congrats you have an account. and it takes me to the Play Store for me to download the apps its popped it. It’s always different. And I recently was texting and it stopped me and brought me to the internet and said you need to down loan a malware app to clear the problem up. Not sure what is going on but its annoying. — Cedar
Solution: Hi Cedar. This issue is similar to Alison’s above so we recommend that you do the same exact steps as suggested for her. This is not a new problem and this topic is covered in several of our previous posts.
Downloaders sometimes contain malwares that makes your phone vulnerable to further malware attacks so make sure to avoid installing them if possible. Try to check reviews of apps before downloading them to prevent compromising your phone.
