Samsung outperforms Apple in smartphone shipments in the second quarter, while rumors of a new iPhone slow the company's sales.
Game of Phones is our weekly podcast that takes a look at the biggest releases, news and rumors in the world of smartphones.
Transcript: Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of the Mobiledia podcast, "Game of Phones," where we take a look at the latest devices, new and rumors in the world of smartphones. Let's jump right into the news this week.
Court documents from Apple and Samsung's legal battle over patents revealed a number of Apple prototypes that didn't make it to the market. First reported by The Verge, the photos show several different designs that never made it to store shelves, and now exist only as an interesting glimpse of what could have been.
You know, for me personally, this whole bit of news is just disappointing. I was under the impression that Apple designer Jony Ive, with his British accent and chiseled good looks, was pretty damn near perfect.
Meanwhile, Best Buy Stores are cutting the price of the iPhone 4 from $100 to $50 when customers sign up for a two-year contract. The retailer joins Target and Radio Shack, which have also discounted the device in the past few weeks. But why are the discounts news? For that, we transition to rumors.
Yes, discounts on the iPhone 4 are further indication that Apple is preparing its next-generation iPhone for a launch sometime this fall.
Speculation began to really ramp up last week when Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at a new device while talking about the company's latest financial figures. Said Cook, "I am fairly convinced that there's an incredible anticipation out there for a future produce. And as you would expect, given what we would be able to deliver in the past, it's a reasonable amount."
Let's put that through our cleverly crafted statement translator: "A new iPhone is coming and you're all going to line up for it and we're going to make a ton of money." That sounds about right to me.
That does it for this week's episode of Game of Phones, but before we go we wanted to do something a little different this week. With all this talk of iPhones that may have been and iPhones that might be, we wanted to take a second to appreciate the iPhones that are.
