It’s always great to see new game ideas at GDC, and some instantly stand out with a great deal of potential. Clockwork is one of those game ideas, and we got to go hands-on with the upcoming puzzle platformer. The game is all about shifting time, but the idea is really taken up a notch beyond what we have previously seen on iOS. A game like Chronology changes the environment based on time, while Clockwork gives you direct control over time to solve a given puzzle level.
The main idea of Clockwork is that you can clone your character through time. This mechanic lets you run to step on a switch, reset time, and then walk through the opening that the previous timed character opens by stepping on the switch. The neatest part is that each time period plays out at once, so you get to see holograms of your previous runs play out in real time to unlock the puzzles of a given level. As you progress, you will unlock new characters with unique time abilities to give you more to think of with tougher puzzles to face. The entire game is set in a finely crafted steampunk world that is fleshed out with a detailed narrative experience.
Clockwork is being developed for multiple platforms, and one of which is iOS, and it’s definitely one we’re looking forward to later this year.
