3D Realms (Max Payne, Duke Nukem) and Intercepter Entertainment (Rise of the Triad) announced today the upcoming release of Duke Nukem II for iOS. Coming in April 2013, Duke Nukem II lets you guide a 2D Duke of mayhem across 32 classic levels from the original game, blowing the crap out of everything that gets in the way.
Originally released in 1993, Duke Nukem II took the original ultra-violence of Duke Nukem over the top with classic 90s-era side-scrolling action.
The game features a ton of weapons, 256 colors, destructible environments, 32 levels, and full touchscreen support, obviously. There are some new artwork and music assets, along with some integrated leaderboards, something the original Duke Nukem II, followed by Duke Nukem 3D in 1996 and Duke Nukem Forever in 2011, never had. This isn’t the first time the game has been ported, either, with a Gameboy Color version, simply titled Duke Nukem releasing in 1999.
The near-future world of 1998 sees Duke fighting the evil Rigelatins, aliens who want to enslave the population of earth. They kidnap Duke Nukem to use his brain, but he breaks free and saves the world, yet again. High drama, for sure. The point of the game it to shoot everything that moves, collect gear along the way, and destroy enemies and bosses alike. Duke gets up to four weapon types, the regular gun, the flamethrower, the laser, and the rocket launcher. You can also collect health and rapid fire power ups as well. Most of the gameplay involves platforming and shooting, climbing laders and shooting, using elevators and shooting, using teleporters and shooting, and finding keycards to get through locked doors. And shooting.
Duke Nukem II for iOS will come to the App Store in April of this year, with a planned release price of $1.99.
