Godzilla conjures up thoughts of building destruction, gigantic size, and monster battles. When thinking of a Godzilla video game, it would seem that match three is the last idea you would think of, but that’s the case in Godzilla – Smash3, a new iOS game to go along with the movie. It’s an interesting mash-up that lets you link big combos to help Godzilla stomp through the streets of Tokyo, and San Francisco. The gameplay set-up is a bit like Darkin as you can drag your finger over matching tiles horizontally, vertically, and diagonally to make massive chains to amplify the destruction.
There are 80 levels included with each one providing multiple waves of buildings, aircrafts, tanks, and more to battle through. There are three types of attack tiles to collect of varying strength, as well as heart, and nuclear fire breath tiles to replenish your health, and special attack, respectively. As you approach each new enemy, there’s a turn based set-up allowing you to make a match for an attack, and then enemies get to attack with some taking a few turns before unleashing a devastating attack. There are boss battles as well, going against M.U.T.O.s from the movie, and there are also some varying objectives. There are levels with move limits, time restrictions, building rubble obstructions, or specific wave attacks to keep the action fresh.
The one consistency with Godzilla – Smash3 is that there’s a ton of action, which is surprising for the genre. If you make a match of at least eight tiles, which happens often, you create a blast tile. The blast tiles clear whole rows, and columns on matches, and can also set off chain reactions to create huge attacks that include splash bonus damage. The best part of the game is seeing the connection between your match, and Godzilla’s actions as the screen is split between the game board, and a highly detailed animated 3D Godzilla. There are numerous animations included for various attacks based on the strength of the matches that you make. There’s a constant supply of big chains, and combos to make for a free flowing matching experience.
Godzilla – Smash3 (Free, Universal) is simply fun above all else, with great puzzle action that does a good job of tying the power of Godzilla to match making for a worthwhile download. The game is also free to play with hearts, boosts, and continues as in-app purchases, just like in Candy Crush.
