Google Lens is Google’s ambitious product that expands upon the ideas introduced in Google Photos. Lens attempts to bring improvements brought about by the use of machine learning and AI to photographs in a live, real-time environment. Past updates to Google Lens began adding in features like smart text selection, a style match feature to search for familiar items, and a real-time mode that can proactively surface information quickly.
It was finally time Google supported devices saw the same love. The latest update to Google Camera adds in a Google Lens Mode, bringing the real-time Lens functionality to Google Pixel, Nexus, and other Google supported devices.
The screenshots above are from a Google Pixel 2 XL running on Android P. You do need Google Camera v5.2.025 to access Lens functionality from within the app. Once you have the latest version of the Camera app installed, simply access Google Lens mode through the hamburger menu. Next, point your camera at objects around you and watch Google Lens identify the object by placing a colored dot on it. Simply tap on this dot to bring up information about the object.
