It’s one of the most irritating messages to receive on an Android handset, “This app is not compatible with your device.” With the release of multiple APK files support for developers however, Google are hoping such errors will soon be ancient history.
In a nutshell, multiple APK file support allows Android app developers to produce apps suitable for whatever device you use them on, be that a smartphone or a tablet. This means when you download an app in the future, the Android Market will choose which version of it is most suited to the handset you own.
Alongside its forthcoming Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, the announcement of multiple APK file support marks Google’s latest assault on incompatibility within the Android Market. Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to debut sometime in the fourth quarter of 2011.
