Life’s tough if you’re a fish. If you’re not flapping on the end of bit of nylon line, then you’re shark bait or you’re just being pushed around by bigger fish. Grow puts you in the fishy driving seat of one such minnow. Your mission: grow your fish so that’s it’s big enough to push everyone else around.
Grow has two modes, adventure and survival. Adventure has a very loose storyline that moves you from jar to tank to aquarium and so on as you progress. The basic premise is that you need to navigate your way round your watery habitat, gobbling up the little fish and avoiding the bigger ones. Power-ups let you turn the tables on your bigger enemies but in general it pays to stay away from them, munch the smaller fish and collect the coins they drop. The coins you collect can then be used in the in-app shop to purchase various upgrades that’ll make your fish faster and stronger than before.
Control is either by accelerometer or by on-screen D-pad. You decide. We didn’t find any particular advantage to either of them – it’s definitely down to personal preference, the tilt method arguably being the most fun.
In Survival mode, the idea is simple: survive wave after wave of fish intent on eating you, while simultaneously eating as many of the other fish as possible.
Grow isn’t a complex game, you can pick it up in seconds and it’ll keep you entertained for a while at least. The repetitious nature of the gameplay, though, does begin to grate relatively quickly. We at Life of Android like our games a little more involving. If you’re after a quick arcade pick-up-and-play app, however, it’s definitely worth a go. In fact, if you want to give it a test drive, just grab the free version here.
The Bottom Line
Simple, easy to pick up, but lacking the variety to make it a real must-have.
