Rockstar’s ultra-successful Grand Theft Auto V was recently updated from 1.00 to 1.08 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but fans noticed that something looked off.
It seems that, either intentionally or unintentionally, the much improved visuals took a hit. The video above details the changes. The game previously made heavy use of parallax occlusion, a technique that helps give flat textures the illusion of depth, and much of that seems to have gone away with this update. Collision physics, too, have changed. Car crashes that were previously an impressive spectacle of bent metal are now scratch-n-dent fender benders. The video above makes it pretty tough to deny, but what’s the cause behind the change?
There’s hope that it’s a bug that’ll get ironed out – something introduced unintentionally in the recent Heists update. Fans have noticed, however, that the sometimes unsteady framerate has improved pretty substantially. The video, which focuses on still close-ups of textures for the most part, doesn’t show that off one way or the other. It’s also possible that this was, for some reason, necessary to get heists working.
