Romance author Jessica Sorensen discusses why the love between her popular characters Callie and Kayden enables their growth.
The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden is the first book in the Coincidence Series. It’s about two broken characters—Kayden and Callie—that are struggling with emotional issues caused by horrible things that happened to them in their childhood. They meet by coincidence in the beginning of the book when Callie sort of saves Kayden from getting beat up by his father. Then they reunite three months later at college where they start to become close, but at the end of the book tragedy strikes.
The Redemption of Callie and Kayden picks up right from where The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden ended, in the aftermath of what happened with Kayden and his father. The book focuses on letting go of the past and healing together individually and as a couple and there is a lot of character growth.
I personally think it’s the characters, their struggles, and growth that make their story unique and is part of the reason why it became popular. Callie and Kayden are both haunted by these terrible pasts and struggle with them every day, yet despite this, an intense connection between them forms. I think with Kayden, the connection stems from Callie’s compassion toward him. It sort of puzzles him at first because he’s not used to it and that makes him want to understand her more. And for Callie, Kayden is the first guy—besides Seth—that she’s ever really trusted. Because of this, she opens up to him, which helps the connection between the two of them grow and helps her begin to heal.
Callie actually plays a large part in Kayden’s healing. Even though she’s still trying to deal with her own problems in The Redemption of Callie and Kayden, she’s there for Kayden and refuses to give up on him no matter what. She also shows him that he’s worth loving and through all of this, she manages to overcome her issues herself. She really is a strong and relatable character and I think that’s part of why people are drawn to the story.
By the end of The Redemption of Callie and Kayden, Callie and Kayden are still working on recovering, but their pasts and pain no longer own them anymore. They’ve both grown stronger as individuals and as a couple and I think the book ends on a good note. Is there more in store for them in the future? Maybe. If the right storyline comes along. But regardless, I think they got their own version of a happily ever after.
