Let’s take a trip back in time now to the dangerously direct days of the wicka wicka wild, wicka wild, wicka wicka, Wild Wild West with this superb sepia six-gun shoot ’em up, Gunman Clive. Sorry about the Will Smith thing, it’s like a form of Tourettes…
Cowboys; if there’s something Clint Eastwood taught us about cowboys it’s that they love a bit of a scrap. Whether it’s a spilt whisky, rustled cattle, or just a funny look, they can’t stop kicking off. So it’s no surprise then that after a group of outlaws cause chaos in Clive’s town and kidnap the Mayor’s daughter, he’s made mad enough to swallow a horn-toad backwards, straps on his six-shooter and goes to save the day and get the girl.
An old-school Old West 3D platform player, Gunman Clive is in turns simple enough to be enjoyable and tricky enough to be utterly frustrating. Run, duck, jump and fire across 16 levels of stationary and moving obstacles, take out the bad guys and energy sapping animals, and dodge the flying lead or end up right back where you started; there’s the frustrating bit.
THE BOTTOM LINE
With its uniquely sketched graphics, sepia and flashes of colour design, smooth gameplay and stupidity defyingly simple controls, Gunman Clive is a real crowd-pleaser that’s destined to become an instant classic. Now, the time for talkin’ is done; saddle up to save the girl, pilgrim, or go git the hell outta Dodge!
