This little gadget keeps your iOS device safe and nearby
Hipkey for the iPhone or iPad is a neat little device that helps you keep your Apple gadget from straying too far. But it has a few other neat tricks up its sleeve, too. We got to see a few of these features at CES 2013.
The first is its alarm mode. You set a maximum distance--up to 50 meters or farther if you're in an open space--you'll allow between yourself and your iPhone or iPad. If your device gets snagged by someone else, for example, and they move too far away from you, the device's alarm will go off. You can also choose to have an iPhone alarm go off. Don't worry about hearing the Hipkey's alarm--it goes up to 90 decibels!
If you have kids, you can switch to Child Mode. Basically, it works in reverse: You place the Hipkey in a child's pocket, and if he or she wanders off too far, your iPhone or iPad alarm will go off. The Child Mode has a "Find Me" feature that lets you track the direction in which your sneaky little kid went so that finding them is a little easier.
One last trick that the Hipkey has is the ability to use it as a motion detector. Let's say you're at a cafe and you want to grab a coffee refill or wash your hands in the restroom, but there's no one around to keep an eye on your laptop or tablet. You place the Hipkey on top of your gagdget, and if someone tries to steal it (i.e. your gadget), it will nudge or move the Hipkey around enough to trigger its motion detectors and sound the alarm on your phone.
The Hipkey is a little pricey at $89.99, but maybe your gadget or child is worth more than that--your call. It will be available this month via Apple's website. Note that it will only work with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, 3rd-gen iPad, and 4th-gen iPad.
