We’re British. We don’t do baseball, we do cricket. However, in the absence of any decent cricket games for Android – feel free to correct us in the comments box – we thought we’d give Homerun Battle 3D a run out (no pun intended). To be fair, Homerun Battle 3D, or HB3D as we shall refer to it henceforth – after all we’ve probably mentioned it enough times for Google now – isn’t really a baseball game so much as a game that takes one of the most important elements of that game and then turns it into an arcade sham of the original. Albeit a very enjoyable one. Anyway, onward we must…
HB3D pitches (pun most definitely intended) you as the batsman (batter?) charged with slamming as many balls as possible out of the park and scoring multiple home runs. The pitcher throws a series of tricky balls your way and you must use the accelerometer to position your bat before tapping the screen to take a swipe. If you catch the ball just right, you’ll fire it way off into the crowd for a home run. If you hit it exceptionally well, you might even hit the big screen and score a bonus. Easy.
There are four modes, training, classic, arcade and online, each with their own subtly different mixture of rules, but online is where the long-term action is. You can match-up against other players of a similar ranking and play against them live online, thwacking balls out of the park as quickly as possible in order to get the highest score and beat your opponent. It’s hugely addictive but the way in which games seem to regularly go down to the wire is eery. We’re not suggesting anything here. It’s just odd… Oh, and while we’re about it, don’t even harbour the merest notion of getting onto the online scoreboard. It’s been well and truly ‘gamed’ by some hack-happy Androiders. Yeah, thanks guys.
Playing onlin is not only a lot of fun, it also earns you credits that can be spent on flashy gear for your batsman. New helmets, bats, jerseys, boots and much more are on offer, although you’ll have to play a lot of HB3D to get some of the more flamboyant kit.
Simple but frenetic fun. We can heartily recommend HB3D, even with its, some might say steep, £3.11 price tag.
The Bottom Line
Essential this is baseball minus any of the tiresome running. Superb.
