When you’re stranded in the jungle, and your legs can’t take any more, there’s only one thing to do. Use your rocket launcher to blast yourself forward to escape the monster filled jungle. That’s the situation in the new iOS game Hooah! that gives you physics based combat. Your character offers ragdool physics, and your movement comes down to the trajectory of your shot, so you fire behind your character to blast forward. It takes a bit to get used to, but it offers a surprising amount of precision to launch your character forward through the 2D side scrolling landscape.
Hooah! turns out to be an endless challenge as your score is simply based on how many meters you travel. Each run plays out the same, and it’s a bit discouraging to have an endless challenge rather than a level based campaign. After a few runs, you’re left with the same game each time, especially since there aren’t that many types of enemies. It’s still fun to blast forward, and then flip your gun around to shoot enemies. Your character moves with every shot, so you do need to be careful when firing upon enemies to not fly into lava, or down a shaft.
Every enemy you kill helps you earn experience points, which are used to unlock more health and ammo, as well as special abilities. All of the action is presented through pixel art, and it’s a nice backdrop to the arcade action gameplay. There is inherent repetition in the game, but it’s still an entertaining challenge while you’re actively firing away. No matter how similar each run is, it’s great to propel forward to catch on to ropes, and shoot at numerous enemies.
Hooah! ($1.99, Universal) delivers an entertaining shooter challenge that is worth picking up.
