I'm going to assume that most of our readers have used Pushbullet, or at least have a general idea how it works. Hooks is a new app that offers a more configurable version of Pushbullet channels so you can get notifications when any number of things happens on the internet. So take Pushbullet, add a dash of IFTTT, and you've got Hooks.
The app has over 100 different alerts across various categories like TV/Movies, weather, sports, tech, and more. Each one has a couple alerts, for example under weather you can get an alert when there's a temperature drop, the specifics of which you can specify. If your favorite sporting squad is playing a match or whatever, you can set up alerts to remind you before each one starts. Want to know what's going on in the world? You can create alerts for an RSS feed of your choice.
Hooks isn't infinitely configurable, though. You have to work with what it gives you, although there's a good amount of customization. It's basically between Pushbullet and IFTTT levels of complexity. New channels are being added weekly, so it's something to check on occasionally.
