For all of you out there who are still waiting to get their hands on the OnePlus One which was released recently and quickly got the title of ”flagship killer’. the Chinese start up OnePlus was a result of former employees who worked at Oppo. The phone quickly became the centre of attention and received a lot of critical acclaim. It offered killer specs in an unbeatable price. However, the invite system was a bit of a bother. But thankfully, even that is being replaced by a pre-order system, this means easier access to the device. The pre-order system will go in motion somewhere in October, later this year.
If you are one of the people who for some reason can’t buy the OnePlus One but want to taste all the software features that are available on it. There is a way you can do it, and it is pretty easy provided you have knowledge about how Android works. Luckily for you, the folks over at HighOnAndroid have created a conversion kit that will help you transform your phone into a OnePlus One. And when we talk about conversion, it is only limited to software. Don’t expect your hardware to magically upgrade itself by just using a simple conversion kit.
To have this conversion kit work, you will going to need an Android device running on the latest Cyanogen Mod 11 build. It is advised to use the ROM that comes straight from the Cyanogen Mod website. If you have a device running the latest CM11 build then you are good to go. The conversion kit have been tried on phones like; HTC One, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Note 3, Note 2, Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus S and is working perfectly. Further more, it also works on Nexus 7, Note 10.7 and Nexus 10, however, there are some small issues, nothing drastic enough to break your user experience.
So without further ado, let us start the conversion process.
Before we began the process, you are going to need some files downloaded. You can download the conversion kit from here; conversion kit. You also need to make sure that your phone/tablet is rooted and running the latest CM 11 build along with a custom recovery like CWM (Clockwork Mod) or TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and a desktop/laptop so you can transfer your files. Once you have all of this set up, you can proceed.
Convert Your Android Device Into OnePlus One.
Step 1: First of all, you have to make sure you have your phone rooted and CM11 is installed on it. Since rooting method for every phone differs, you would have to find the root method yourself.
Step 2: Once you are confirm that your phone is rooted, download the HighOnAndroid Conversion kit and copy it on your SD card.
Step 3: Once you have copied the the kit in your SD card, it’s time to reboot your phone in recovery mode. We recommend using the latest versions for both the CWM and TWRP recovery. In case you don’t have any recovery installed on your phone, follow the steps below.
Download and install ROM Manager Pro on your phone. You must have a rooted phone for the app to work.
Once downloaded, run the app and grant the permission when prompted.
When you are in the app, tap on ‘Recovery Setup’
You’ll be taken to a new screen, there click ‘Clockwork Mod Recovery’.
On a new screen, if your phone is supported by the recovery, your phone model will be listed. Just tap the phone model once it appears
Your phone will reboot after that and the recovery will be installed. In case you go straight to your phone, just open the ROM Manager again and select ‘Reboot into Recovery’ option.
Step 4: Once you have entered the recovery mode, it is time to start the flashing process. Navigate down using the volume down button and select the ‘install zip’ option by pressing the power key.
Step 5: Then navigate to ‘install zip from SD card’ and select it by pressing the power button.
Step 6: You will be taken to your SD card, now navigate down until you find the conversion kit and press the power button to select it.
Step 7: You will be prompted whether or not you want to flash the conversion kit. Just choose the one that says yes by pressing the power button after navigating to it.
Step 8: Once you press the power button, the flashing will start and will take few minutes for the process to finish. Once the process is done, simply reboot your device and wait. Do note that the first boot will take some time so sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee. Once your phone boots, you will notice that the whole UI would now look exactly like the one you have seen on OnePlus One and all the extra goodies including the OnePlus One camera as well as the lock screen will be there.
