A smartphone is only good if it has the power to stay on. Once it runs out of power then you need to charge its batteries to be able to use it again. While some smartphones require constant charging others, like the Samsung #GalaxyS5 with its 2800mAh battery, runs at longer intervals between charges. Sometimes we take charging for granted as it’s very easy to do. Just plug in the #S5 to its wall charger and wait for the phone to be fully charged.
What the phone does not appear to be charging? This and other related charging issues are what we will be discussing in this latest troubleshooting series.

S5 Not Charging
Problem:I noticed 2 days ago that the battery would not charge but the charging bar shows as though it’s charging. Took out the battery, replaced it, and tried charging using a laptop all in vain. Thank you
Solution: If the charging indicator is moving then your phone may be charging but it is charging very slowly. There are various reasons why this is happening.
The first thing you should check is your phone charging port. Inspect it for any signs of dust or lint. If you spot any then clean it using compressed air or a cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
Most of the time the USB cord causes this issue. This happens when a wire inside the USB cable is loose or cut. Try using a different USB cord then see if the problem gets resolved.
You should also check your phone software and see if this has something to do with the problem. Start by taking out the battery then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This discharges your phone and clears out its RAM. Reinsert the battery then turn on your phone and check its charging status.
If the issue remains then back up your phone data and do a factory reset.
S5 “to charge faster use the cable and charger provided by the manufacturer” Error When Charging
Problem:I’m on my third charger. I get the message “to charge faster use the cable and charger provided by the manufacturer.”” It started about 9 months after I got the phone with the original charger. Have gone to Verizon twice now and they have replaced the charger, which fixes it for a couple months, then it starts again. I woke up to a dead phone again. They said it could be the charging port, but it doesn’t happen with my car charger, and plus, if it were the charging port, why would a new charger fix the issue, albeit temporarily? Thank you for any assistance or information you may have for me!
Solution: The first thing that you should suspect is a defective USB cord. If the cord is broken or has a loose wire inside it then you will get this type of error message as your phone will not be getting the required amount of power from the charger. Try using another USB cord and see if the problem still persists.
The second item that you should check is your phone charging port. Inspect it for any signs of dirt or lint. If you spot any then use a can of compressed air to clean it or a cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
S5 Charging Slowly After Installing New Apps
Problem:Every time I install a new app, the phone won’t charge properly. Overnight charging from 0% leaves it only 11% in the morning, and this is with the quick-charge cord. I feel like they’re standard apps I’ve tried to install: ebay, flashlight, fx mobile, nfl mobile. Please help! Thanks so much!
Solution: If you suspect that the apps you downloaded is causing your phone to charge slowly then you can check if this is the case by starting your phone in Safe Mode before you charge it overnight. Once your phone is in Safe Mode the apps that you installed are disabled leaving only the pre-installed apps running. Check the charging status in the morning when you wake up. If your phone charges normally then you may need to uninstall the app that is causing this problem.
If however your phone still charges slowly even in Safe Mode then there may be another reason why this is happening. I suggest using another charger with another USB cord in charging your phone. If the issue still persists then get a new battery see if this resolves the issue.
S5 Not Charging
Problem: Hello! I’ve had my phone a little over a year now and it just started having charging issues. First, it wasn’t charging at all, and after replacing the charger and soft resetting the phone, I did a factory reset thinking the resolution may lie there. It did fix my charging issue… only minimally though. Now my phone only charges when it’s powered on, it charges very slowly (even in ultra power saving mode) and my phone isn’t detecting the charger, old or new… I only know the phone is being charged because every time I restart my phone after having my phone connected to the charger for a while, when the phone powers back on it has a small increase in battery life… If my phone is powered down though, it doesn’t detect the battery (does the yellow triangle thing) and won’t charge. I haven’t replaced the battery yet because I don’t know if it’s a battery issue or the phone itself… I was hoping maybe you guys have an idea of what the issue might be? (: any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA!
Solution: By doing the factory reset you have more or less eliminated any software related problems that may be causing this issue. You have also tried using a different charger (hopefully with a new USB cord as well). Just make sure that the new charger you used is known to work.
One other thing that you could do is to inspect your phone charging port for any signs of dirt or lint. Presence of these foreign matter may interfere with the charging process and is known to cause this type of issue. You can clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air or cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the issue then I suggest you proceed with getting a new battery.
S5 Does Not Charge
Problem: I’m in the landscaping business and was fixing a roof that a tree had fallen on, while working I’m careful not to have phone directly on my person, while I am having to move the tree branches from the back yard to the front to get picked up by heavy trash, my boss has to leave to get more supplies, while he is gone I finish moving the branches and get a little break so I go on the phone to play zombie defense to kill some time, I notice after a few minutes of playing the game the battery is low so I go into battery doctor to run optimize mode and somehow it was running task killer, in the background it was forcing stop on server all different apps and I clicked the cancel button, shortly after my boss came back and I put the phone on the charger and it wouldn’t charge at all, it died and now won’t come on at all, please help, I’ve tried to factory reset it, I’ve taken the battery out and put it back in and still absolutely no response won’t turn on at all.
Solution: You should try to take out the battery then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This completely discharges your phone and clears out its RAM. Reinsert the battery then try to charge it. If the problem still persists then try using another charger with a new USB cord or you can also get a new battery.
S5 Charges Slowly
Problem:Yesterday my phone was charging perfectly fine. Today when I tried to charge it, my phone said that I wasn’t using the cable or adapter that originally came with the phone which caused it to charge slow. Please help
Solution: This issue usually occurs if you are not using the USB cord and charger that came with your phone. If you are using it then check if charger port of your phone for any signs of dirt or lint. These foreign particles can interfere with the charging process and will cause this issue. If necessary clean the charging port with a can of compressed air or a cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
If the problem still persists then try using another USB cable with your charger. The cable you are using right now may be faulty and have a loose or cut wire inside it which is causing this issue to occur.
