Need entertainment on your daily commute? Games and movies are fun, but no medium has a longer history of helping travelers stave off boredom than the noble book. With the advent of ebook readers and tablets, there has never been a better time to be a traveling bibliophile, as you can carry hundreds of books in the palm of your hand (once you get them onto your device, of course).
Here’s our quick guide to loading ebooks onto some of the more popular eReaders: the Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Kobo Glo.
Tap the Books icon. This will take you to the Books library on your Kindle. From here, you can purchase and download ebooks, as well as browse the content already on your device.
Tap the Store icon. This will take you to the store, where you can preview and purchase ebooks. If you want to preview an ebook, tap Download Sample to download the free sample.
Buy an ebook.
When you have found an ebook that seems right up your alley, tap the Buy icon to purchase it.
Alternatively, you can rent an ebook. Only some ebooks (usually school textbooks) are available for rent. When you rent an ebook on Kindle, you pay to have access to it for a period of time, rather than owning the ebook permanently. This can save you a good deal of money, if you only want to read the book once, so college students, take note!
Kick back, and watch the progress bar fill up. When you buy an ebook, it will automatically download to your Kindle device. The ebook will also be registered to your account, so you can download it to any other Amazon devices you own.
Read! The step you’ve been waiting for. With your ebook downloaded to your Kindle, and your Kindle in hand, it’s time to start reading. Your ebook will be in your Books library, which you can access, as mentioned, by tapping the Books icon.
If you want to read an ebook on your Barnes & Noble Nook, you have a couple options. First, you can buy an ebook from Barnes & Noble’s online store.
Tap the Shop icon on the bottom of your screen to go to the store. From here, you can browse Books, Newspapers, and other materials to purchase. Note: to buy books from the shop, you will need a Wi-Fi connection and a Barnes & Noble account.
Tap on the Books icon to begin browsing.
When you find a book you like, tap on the button displaying the book’s price. This will change to a button asking you to confirm your purchase. Tap this, and the price of the book will be charged to the credit/debit card you have registered with your Barnes & Noble account.
If you’re using the default setup on your Nook, the book you purchased will begin downloading immediately. If you have set up your Nook to require a password any time somebody makes a purchase, you will be prompted to enter that password before you can complete your purchase.
If you have ebooks on your computer (in EPUB or PDF formats, for example) you can transfer those to your Nook.
Connect your Nook to your computer. Your Nook should have come with a Micro USB cable. Use this to connect your Nook and computer.
Drag files to your Nook. Your Nook will appear alongside the disk drives on your computer. Click on it to view the various folders on your Nook. For the purposes of putting an ebook on your device, you want to open the folder entitled My Files. Drag ebooks or other files you want to transfer, and drop them in this folder.
Disconnect. Once you have transferred all the files you want, right-click on your Nook icon and click Eject. Then, disconnect the Micro USB cable. Your ebooks should now be viewable in the Library section of your Nook.
Like the Nook, the Kobo Glo is compatible with formats like EPUB and PDF, meaning you have options when it comes to putting ebooks on the device.
Buying ebooks from the Kobo marketplace:
Tap the Bookstore icon on your home screen. From here, you can browse all the offerings from Kobo.
Select an ebook. Once you find a book that’s to your liking, select it, and tap the Buy icon. You’ll be prompted to enter your billing information. If you’ve used the Kobo shop before, you can select billing information that has already been saved to your account.
Tap Done to complete your purchase. All the ebooks you’ve purchased from Kobo will automatically be saved to their cloud storage. You can download these books at any time by tapping Library, and then selecting Books, where you can view all the ebooks you have saved in the cloud. Simply tap on the book’s cover, and it will begin downloading.
As mentioned, the Kobo Glo can also read EPUB and PDF files. If you have ebooks from another source, such as a public library or different store, they will typically come in those formats. However, they will also typically come with some form of DRM (Digital Rights Management), so it will take a little work to get them on your Kobo.
You can use the free Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software to add them to your Kobo ebook reader. Simply download ADE from Adobe.com, and follow the installation instructions. You’ll also need to set up an Adobe ID, which you can do at Adobe’s website. Once you’ve registered with Adobe, you can link ADE to make your ebooks compatible with your Kobo ebook reader.
Find your ebook file. When you purchase an ebook from another source, it will generally come with a license in the form of a URLLINK.acsm file. Open that file in ADE, and the software will verify that you do own the ebook, providing you with an EPUB or PDF file.
Connect your Kobo to your computer using a Micro USB cable. Your Kobo will show up Devices.
Find the EPUB or PDF file for your ebook, and drag it to your Kobo device on your computer.
Once you’ve moved all the files you wish, right click on your Kobo device and Eject it. Disconnect the Micro USB cable, and you should be all set.
