Unlike other company’s like Samsung and Sony, HTC didn’t announce the flagship at MWC, back in February. However, they came up with a mid-ranger device that managed to get a pretty good amount of hype. Despite being a mid-ranger, the Desire 816 offered a pretty decent package.

HTC Desire 816 comes with Android 4.4.2 Kitkout of the box layered with HTC’s latest Sense 6.0 UI, the phone is available in both single and dual SIM variants. There’s a 2,600 mAh non-removable battery under the hood. The reviews so far have proved to be positive, with smaller draw backs regarding the aesthetics of the device as well as sub-par battery life and speaker loudness, but nothing to drastic.
The phone has been in the market for over three months and has received some positive sales. The guide is consists of simple steps that wouldn’t be a problem for the new comers, but in case you come across a problem, don’t take a hasty decision as it might brick your device. Note that rooting will void your warranty as well so do it only if you are completely okay with it.
Before you star the rooting process, you will be needing to download the USB drivers from HTC. You will also need to have the boot loader of your device unlocked. To unlock the boot loader, head over to the link given below. Download link for the drivers is also linked below.
Step 1: First of all, you will be needing to download the custom recovery file for your HTC Desire 816, to do so, head to the following link; Custom recovery.
Step 2: After the recovery is downloaded, head over to this link and download fastboot.zip.
Step 3: After both files have been downloaded, you will need to reboot your phone into HBOOT. To do that, press volume down and power button together for some time, keep them pressed until you see a white screen with three droids on the bottom.
Step 4: Now that you are in the HBOOT menu, you will need to choose the Fastboot from the list.
Step 5: Now back to your PC, you will need to extract the fastboot.zip and then move the downloaded en.recovery.img to the extracted fastboot folder.
Step 6: Now you will have to connect your device with the PC using the supplied USB cable.
Step 7: Once the device has been connected, go to the fastboot folder and press shift + right click and choose “Open Command Window Here” you will then see a command window in the folder.
Step 8: After the command window has opened, you will need to type the following command and execute it.
fastboot flash recovery recovery_en.img
Step 9: Once you have executed the command, you will shortly see a message saying that the recovery has been flashed successfully. In some cases, you might see a message saying that it is waiting for the device. There’s no need to panic, just check if the USB connections are properly connected and the required drivers are installed.
Step 10: Now if you want to make sure that everything has been successful, just reboot into HBOOT again and choose recovery this time.
