Recently, LG’s Optimus 4X HD struck gold with it’s Cyanogenmod 10 tease, but that very gem left many wondering how the heck did those developers gain root access to their phones?! Many websites have since posted supposed root methods, but none have actually delivered a viable way of doing so.
We at Android Authority are here to tell you that there is now a stable, working LG Optimux 4X HD root method that will allow you to get the most out of your flagship LG device. Interested? I thought so.
I’ll start by saying, as always, that you are running the risk of bricking your phone by following any root guide. Also, this root method employs utilities developed for the HTC One X, but I can assure you that it is safe and stable. I’m also going to give credit where credit is due, to XDA user qaz753 for actually accomplishing this task first.
Anyways, lets begin to collect our necessary files.
After downloading all three, unzip and install the LG USB Driver. During it’s installation, take the time to enable USB Debugging under Settings>Developer Options. You will also want to navigate to Settings>Security>Unknown Sources and make sure it is selected as well.
Then, extract the HTC One X Rootkit (onxr.zip) to C:\onxr.
After this step, move the IS11LG_SystemBackupTest.signed.apk to your LG Optimus 4X HD, and use a utility like Androzip File Manager to navigate to the .apk to install then open it.
Next, power-off and restart your 4X HD and connect it via USB to your PC.
Click Start on your PC, and type “cmd” (without quotes) into the search bar. Right click on “cmd” and hit “Run as Administrator“.
Once in the command prompt, type (without quotes) “cd C:\onxr” and press enter. Then type “Root” and hit that enter key one more time. Your device should cycle through about three reboots, which will conclude the rooting process. Go to the Google Play store and download “SuperSU”, open it, and update the binaries.
You can then use an app like RootChecker to verify you have root access. You can also download ROM Manager and flash the latest ClockworkMod Recovery, as it should only be a matter of time before we start to see custom ROM’s.
