This works only for iPad 1 as the version of redsn0w we are about to use cannot jailbreak iPad 2. Also, if you have a tethered jailbreak already on your iPad, you can either use the following steps, or use Corona Untether app from Cydia.
The only thing that you need to do, basically, is to upgrade the firmware and let the software do the rest of the thing. Here’s how:
Step 1: Download the iOS 5.0.1 firmware for iPad from here.
Step 2: Connect your iPad to the PC / Mac and launch iTunes.
Step 3: Hit ‘Restore’ but remember to keep SHIFT pressed while you do that. Now, choose the downloaded firmware file and let iTunes upgrade your iPad.
Step 4: Now, switch off your iPad. Launch Redsn0w.
Step 5: Press ‘Jailbreak’ button. It will guide you through certain steps which will put your iPad in the DFU mode. You will just have to follow instructions on screen for that.
Step 6: Wait till the process is complete. Now, select ‘Install Cydia’ and hit ‘Proceed’ – in case you already have a jailbroken iPad which you are only untethering, do not select ‘Install Cydia.’In about five minutes or so, your iPad will be jailbroken. This will make your iPad an untethered jailbreak iPad for iOS 5.0.1 – the latest iOS from Apple.
The untethered jailbreak for iPad is a great way to install many cool apps which are available on the Cydia app store. These are not available on the iTunes app store which makes people jailbreak their device. The advantage of an untethered jailbreak is that you can reboot your iPad without having to connect it to the system, run the software just to boot it! A tethered jailbreak has this limitation.
