Howstuffworks is now a mighty global brand. Created in 1998, it’s grown into a multi-platform ‘edutainment’ behemoth. And now it’s made its way onto Android by virtue of a free app that puts a whole lot of knowledge in the palm of your small but perfectly formed hands.
HSW’s homescreen is divided into several categories: ‘quotes’ and ‘facts’ – that quite predictably provide you with random pure text facts and quotes from respected historical commentators – ‘shows’, which pulls together hundreds of podcasts from the HSW team, ‘featured’ content that’s been picked out as must-see content and finally ‘read’ which gives you unfettered access to the app’s wealth of encyclopaedic info.
There’s such a vast amount of content available to consume that it’s difficult to figure out why a) it’s free and b) there appear to be zero ads. We won’t question Howstuffworks’s business model since it appears to benefit us…
Just how often and how comprehensively HSW updates the app remains to be seen and, if we had to be picky, we’d like to see a more comprehensive search function rather than the horizontal content category bar that splits content into easily digestible sections, but there’s a certain charm in finding random nuggets of information that shouldn’t be understated.
A great – excuse us – ‘edutainment’ app that’s well worth a download and should be applauded for the lack of ads.
The Bottom Line
Free with zero ads and containing a wealth of useful (and some not so useful) information. We recommend downloading it forthwith…
