Well what do we have here? Looks like we’ve got ourselves an HP tablet patent filed prior to the iPad release. What does this mean? It could mean many things but one thing it shows is that HP was already designing a tablet prior to the release of the iPad and filed this patent in October of 2009. The name “TouchPad” had been chosen at the time of this patent filing but was already taken. It wasn’t until January of 2011 that HP was granted the rights for the use of the name “TouchPad.” The following month the TouchPad was officially announced at the Think Beyond event.
This patent is yet to be granted. If however; HP is granted this patent, what could the implications be? In the midst of a Google purchase of Motorola and patent wars between many ODMs, HP shows off another weapon to add to its large IP arsenal. The iPad has been the leader in tablet sales since it was launched a little over a year ago. HP had the concept for a tablet in the works but was lacking a great tablet OS. They acquired Palm and webOS in July of 2010 and have been committed to making it a success.
The tablet race started last summer. Do you think this marathon is already over or just begun? Either way, it’s nice to know the HP TouchPad was an original concept and not an iPad copycat.
