Back in September word got out that HTC was scrapping their smart watch plans. Those reports were then challenged by another report stating that the watch wasn’t scrapped but was still in progress. That left us not really knowing what was happening. Well thankfully HTC has finally spoken up and brought clarity to the matter.
HTC America’s head Jason Mackenzie recently spoke with Re/code and confirmed with them that HTC had planned to launch a watch this year but have postponed the release. According to Mackenzie, “it ended up just not being ready.”
Drew Bamford, HTC’s head of their Creative Labs Team, elaborated a little bit on what it means for them to be ready. Bamford states that despite the increased popularity and availability of wearables today, “there’s not a strong reason to wear one every day.” He goes on to say that “When we come to market with our product we want to make sure the product has a strong point of view and there is a really compelling reason to strap it on your wrist….We honestly don’t think anyone has gotten it right.”
I’m interested to know exactly what “point of view” they’re taking and how they intend on making a smart watch a must have rather than a convenience piece. Hopefully their choice to delay will pay off down the road.
