HTC has surprised many of us when the company launched their first 64-bit device at IFA in Berlin earlier this month. One would expect a company like HTC to make a big deal out of releasing a 64-bit device, for that device to be a high-end offering, HTC 820 is everything but a high-end device. Don’t get me wrong though, this is a solid offering, but it doesn’t offer top-notch specifications and it definitely has its shortcomings. Anyhow, let me explain.
Let’s take a look at the specs, that will give you a better idea what kind of a device is this. Desire 820 features a 5.5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of in-built storage (expandable via MicroSD card up to 128GB). The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 64-bit octa-core processor (four 1.5GHz cores and four 1Ghz cores) which comes with Adreno 405 GPU. On the back of the device, you can find a 13-megapixel camera while there’s an 8-megapixel shooter located on the front of the device. 2600mAh battery is also a part of the package and the device comes with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed with HTC’s Sense 6 UI on top of it. HTC has promised this device will get Android “L” in the future which is required in order for you to take full advantage of that 64-bit processor under the hood. BoomSound front-facing speakers are also included and the device looks really nice in my humble opinion. You get a unibody polycarbonate design here and this is a 4G LTE Cat 4 capable device. It comes in black, white, pink, red and turquoise color options.
As you can see this is not exactly the best HTC can do, but it is a mighty solid device. Snapdragon 615 isn’t Qualcomm’s fastest and strongest 64-bit offering and the device’s screen size to resolution ratio is really not the best, I’m surprised they didn’t include at least a 1080p panel here. In any case, if you like this device it will be available for purchase in China in about a day for 1999 Yuan which is a good price for a device like this if you ask me.
