There are many manufacturers with a presence here at XDA, and that list is only growing. Some of them are big players like HTC, Samsung, and Sony, while there are others with a limited presence due to a lower number of devices available to the public or devices that are simply too regional to be able to make it to our site (but we are fixing this last part). One such manufacturer is one of China’s largest cell phone makers, Huawei. Many people think of them and automatically think of a lower grade, poorly manufactured product—but this could not be further from the truth. Huawei has been going through leaps and bounds to try and increase their market penetration worldwide, and boy did they get through. Just in the United States alone, you will likely find at least one or two models of Huawei devices in most carrier lineups, particularly pre-paid (no-contract) carriers.
As a Huawei user myself, I have no complaints. I’ve used a Huawei Premia 4G for a long time, and I was very happy with the device. However, being ORD positive, I am always in need of a newer OS version, despite of how good the current one may perform. The Premia 4G came out of the box running ICS 4.0.4 AOSP, but it saw an upgrade to the already available at launch Jelly Bean. In fact, many (if not most) of the Premia’s predecessors have seen a similar fate, where they would never see an update. It may seem that the tides are changing because according to many threads in the Huawei Ascend P6 forum like the one created by XDA member xman9491, there is an unofficial beta firmware package floating around the Internet that takes the P6 from a lesser version of JB to the latest Kitkat release at 4.4.2, effectively putting it ahead of many of the big players in terms of updates. Do keep in mind that the P6 contains Huawei’s own processor, so all the work for the new version of Android to work on this has been done from scratch.
There is no real indication as to when this new update will hit the devices, but one thing is for sure: The Chinese manufacturer has put a lot of time and effort into this new package. Reports from people currently using the device state that the update comes with a new version of their UI as well as floating apps, an updated notification and control center, and much more. If you have a P6 and you were not aware of this, you are definitely missing out. As stated, this has sparked lots of development in the section, so if you have one and want to bring it up to speed, now is your chance. However, remember that this is a work-in-progress and certainly nothing official. Please report any bugs you may come across.
