There are two BIG phone launches on the horizon: Google’s Pixel 3 and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro – but which is going to be more exciting?
I’ve used all of Google’s Pixel phones so far, and before that, I was a confirmed Nexus freak. For this reason, I’m always excited about seeing some new hardware from The Big G.
But this year’s Pixel 3 phones don’t seem to have me excited in the usual fashion; the leaks paint a pretty bleak picture: more of the same, basically. And that means ugly bezels and Google’s “hardly-trying” design language.
Sure, you’ll get Android Pie 100% untouched and stripped down in all its splendor which is great for fans of the platform. But what else? An improved camera? You bet.
Both of these things are very good. The camera should be exceptional too, but I just can’t shake the feeling that this year’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will be kind of boring compared to other releases.
Boring Pixel 3 Design Strikes Again
You will have seen the leaks, and if you have you might be thinking what I’m thinking: why isn’t Google being more daring with its design? Why is it not trying some new things? It certainly has the money to do these things.
I didn’t mind the look and feel of the Pixel and Pixel 2, but that was mostly because I thought by the third generation Google would have really nailed the physical design of the phone. And this doesn’t appear to be happening in 2018.
And Then You Have The Huawei Mate 20 Pro…
And that phone sounds utterly incredible. The latest leaks are talking about all kinds of technology from a fingerprint scanner in the display to the introduction of Bone Voice ID (instant unlock with your voice, even in noisy places).
Chuck in a badass camera, which is now pretty much confirmed, and all the usual bells and whistles, alongside a slick new design, and I think the Huawei Mate 20 Pro could well be the more tempting option of late-2018 when stacked up alongside the Pixel 3 XL.
The Pixel 3 has a couple of USPs right now:
Fast Android updates;
A great camera
But I think Huawei will be working on both of these things with its Huawei Mate 20 Pro release. Things like Project Treble and massive investment in imaging technology have reduced the gap between the two phone makers in recent years.
This is why Huawei is now one of the biggest phone makers on the planet, next to Apple and Samsung.
It is also why I think the Huawei Mate 20 Pro could well be one of the biggest selling phones of late-2018.
Sorry, Google! But I think my next phone could well be the Mate 20 Pro…
