Earlier today in London, Huawei announced the Ascend P8, their latest flagship device to market the Huawei brand to those in Europe and outside of Asia. Traditionally, the Ascend P line of devices have been solid performers, with a flagship quality that makes but a few compromises in order to be cheaper than other flagship devices. In other words, the Ascend P8 will offer the majority of users the sort of performance and fit and finish that they want, without being too expensive.
The specs of a device often determine how much a device costs, and this time around Huawei haven’t change too much from last year’s model. There’s a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 display here which gives it a pixel density of 424ppi and determines the device’s measurements of 144.9mm x 72.1mm x 6.4mm. The beating heart of this year’s Ascend P8 is Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 930 which is itself an ocata-core 64-bit CPU clocked at 2.0 GHz. Huawei have made some lofty claims concerning this chip in the past, namely that it outperforms other Snapdragon processors. Backing this up is 3GB of RAM and a choice of either 16 or 32GB of expandable storage. All of this weighs just 144g.
There’s a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera round the back here, which is complete with 1080p video recording and even Optical Image Stabilisation. This is accompanied by a front-facing 8-megapixel camera. Huawei have gone to great lengths to load up their camera with all sorts of interesting new features, such as the ability to enjoy light painting and such. As far as connectivity goes, this is a GSM device that supports TDD LTE: B40 FDD LTE: B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B17/B18/B19/B20/B25/B26/B28 UMTS: 800(B6,Japan)/800(B19,Japan)/850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz and there’s Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11n, GPS, GLONASS, a 3.5mm headphone jack and everything else you’d expect to see. There’s a 2,680 mAh battery under-the-hood here and everything is running on Android 5.0 Lollipop with Huawei’s Emototion 3.1 UI on top of it.
