The Huffington Post has been knocking around on this here internet since 2005 and recently had the audacity to launch in the UK. We’re big fans of ‘The Huff’ here at Life of Android and have criminally ignored the brand’s Android app. Until now. To keep things brief, the HP aggregates content from all over the web and brings it together in one place. Which of course puts it head-to-head with apps like Newsy, although of course The Huffington Post has less of a video bent.
HP offers very little we haven’t already seen from myriad news apps. Both CNN and BBC News arguably do the navigation thing better than HP, but what they don’t have is Huffington’s aggregated content, bringing in comment and opinion from all over the web.
The focus is, as you’d expect, heavily US-focussed, but there’s plenty here of interest to UK readers. Naturally, you’ll want to make sure you get your UK news fix elsewhere but when it comes to middle eastern and world conflicts, the reporting here is plenty good enough to justify the free download.
Video content is pulled in from all over the web using story keywords which by and large works, but occasionally goes hilariously wrong. Most of the time it does the research work for you and pulls up a raft of related content for you to read further into your chosen story.
Design-wise, The Huff’ is lacking, but there’s so much to explore that you forget that fairly quickly.
The Bottom Line
Quirky, US-centric news app that still has plenty to offer UK readers. Definitely worth a look.
