Instagram is an extremely popular social photo app to the point that Facebook acquired it for $1 billion. Since then, Instagram has continued to operate as its own entity, and has updated the main Instagram app with numerous enhancements including the ability to record up to 15 second video. It turns out that Instagram acquired Luma, which offered the first-ever image-stabilization technology for smartphone videos, which had obvious uses for the main Instagram app. There are other potential uses, and that’s present in Instagram’s new app Hyperlapse, which offers time lapse functionality combined with powerful auto stabilization.
Hyperlapse offers time lapse photography, which is coming in iOS 8, and is offered by quite a few existing apps. Instagram had their work cut out for them to make for a truly interesting alternative, and they just may have pulled it off. Hyperlapse epitomizes a minimalistic interface as it launches straight to recording with a single button to tap to start recording. Once you start, the app does all of the rest to capture footage, and show you a running timer of how long you have been filming, and how long the resulting time lapse video will be. After you tap to stop recording, the time lapse preview begins, and you can adjust the speed rate from 2x all the way to 12x. From there, you can share to Instagram, or Facebook, obviously, and it’s automatically saved to your camera roll. The app also doesn’t process the video, and take up storage space until you decide that you want to.
The process couldn’t be simpler, but that simplicity doesn’t detract from the professional quality that is provided. The time lapse videos look absolutely amazing, and that’s mainly because of the auto stabilization. Rather than requiring a tripod, or extremely steady hand, the app can account for walking, running, jumping, driving, flying, and any type of motion. The resulting videos are silky smooth despite the motion, and it allows for all new potential time lapse creations. No longer are you limited to a fixed position, and instead can show distances, and changing angles, while providing the speed of time lapse. There’s so much creative potential, and the results look absolutely gorgeous to get your mind thinking about what else you can do with Hyperlapse. Also, anyone can join in thanks to the extremely accessible interface, and it’s amazing the technology provided to everyone.
Hyperlapse (Free, Universal) is a must have app to let you create beautifully looking time lapses with ease, and the results have the makings to be a go to new creative medium.
