We’ve come a long way since television was a fat-bottomed, CRT corner-clogger, in terms of not just scale, but resolution and functionality. Progressing from HD ready to Full HD to Ultra HD and from the likes of Oracle and Ceefax to opened-up-to-see-everything via the miracle of the modern world that is the Smart TV, the incredible pace of idiot lantern innovation knows no limits.
But, whilst the Smart TV and its access to the online arena has revolutionised the home lives of many, to many more the high price of the models available confines them to the realms of the financially unobtainable. However, as we’ve increasingly seen on this site with the likes of the Favi SmartStick, the MK802 and the UG802, forking out a fortune for a set with smarts already built into it isn’t the only way to get the internet and an array of Android apps onto the big screen; and the latest alterative is available on pre-order now for around just £60.
Called the QX1 from Chinese clever-clogs iMito, an Android 4.2 Jelly Bean powered TV stick and mini-antenna combo, the QX1 comes packing a quick-as-you-like quad-core Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex A9 processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage (expandable via microSD), Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and a mini HDMI plug so that you can just slot it into your ‘dumb’ TV and enter the internet via the open source OS instantly.
But power is nothing without control, so at the opposite end fro the HDMI there’s also a useful USB port into which you can stick the stick with a remote control, mouse, keyboard or game pad, covering any internet eventuality and, of course, a port for the aforementioned external antenna, just in case the stick itself struggles with your Wi-Fi.
A far more moderate means to get Google Play and all its apps, the likes of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and, well, anything else you’d normally need a computer to view onto your telly without having to remortgage the house or sell an internal organ to afford, the iMito QX1 is clearly about to become the smart TV choice of smart people.
