The Hey Siri event was the stage for the all new iPhone in the form of the 4.7” iPhone 6S & 5.5” 6S Plus. The new iPhones take last year’s design, and outfit them with all new features beginning with 3D Touch. The Force Touch technology of the Apple Watch is now available on a larger scale in the 6S line. Apple has made new iOS 9 features specifically to respond to different degrees of pressure that you touch with. You can tap on a stock app on the home screen to bring up a quick action menu to jump right into specific functions of the particular apps.
The 6S 3D Touch also features a new mode called “Peek and Pop” allowing you to tap lightly to preview an e-mail or message, and then tap harder to open the item full screen. You can also peek to preview web pages, locations, or photos, and if you lift your finger, you go right back to where you were. The iPhone 6S is powered by the all new A9 chip, which delivers 70% faster processing, and 90% improved graphics rendering. The A9 chip is the third generation 64-bit architecture, and includes the M9 chip built right in for always on motion tracking, as well as always on “Hey Siri” support to activate Siri with your voice. The new iPhones include TouchID 2.0 for faster detection for improved unlocking of your device, and Apple Pay confirmation.
The iPhone 6S camera includes a new 12MP lens with a new image signal processor to focus all of the new pixels. The camera also supports 4K video that can be edited in iMovie with the power of the A9 chip. The front facing camera features a new 5 megapixel lens, and the 6S uses the retina display to act as a flash for your your front camera pictures. In addition to the new camera, there’s also a new photo technology in the form of Live Photos that capture the moment before and after a photo to bring your photos to life. Live Photos are reminiscent of the photos in the Harry Potter universe, and the system is on by default so you’re ready share motion and sound enabled photos. The iPhone 6S & 6S Plus look essentially the same, though they’re crafted with Series 7000 aluminum for greater strength.
The iPhone 6S retails for $199/$299/$399 for 16GB/64GB/128GB with the 6S Plus adding $100 to each storage tier, with all prices based on two year contract. There are new monthly installment options through AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and many other carriers worldwide. Apple is also offering their own iPhone upgrade program for $32/month to get a new iPhone every year with Apple Care+ included. The iPhone 6S & 6S Plus come in silver, space gray, and gold with rose gold as a new option.
