Classical Guitar: Bach is a guitar tutorial that combines sheet music and instructional video for your iPad. With this offering from G-Men, you get four of J. S. Bach’s biggies: Minuet in G; Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring; Air on a G String; and Bouree in E Minor. It may not sound like much (only four pieces?) but each comes with a comprehensive twenty minute video tutorial as well as the sheet music.
How does it work?
Once you select the song you want to learn from the top of the home page, simply tap the Music icon at the bottom to go to the sheet music page. From here you can do some sight reading, start the playback or fire up the video tutorial.
As with G-Men’s other guitar app (Blues Masters), you can set the tempo to full speed, 3/4 or 1/2 speed so you can learn slowly to set the correct pattern in your memory and then turn up the speed. Using the video tutorial will let you watch the instructor’s hands as he guides you through each phrase of the piece. The video can be expanded to full screen. If you tap on the video you can access the volume, fast forward, rewind, and video position slide controls.
Is it contagious?
For players who would like to give classical a try, this is a great starting point. For music aficionados, there is probably no better or more sublime place to start than with J. S. Bach. You may have to retune your guitar (the low E becomes a drop D) but it is well worth the adjustment and the time to learn some Bach and expand your guitar skills.
