The iPad mini 4 is still many months away, but today we’re getting what could be a first look at the upcoming tablet. A fresh batch of hands-on photo and video of the device’s rear shell obtained by NoWhereElse appear to reveal a few key differences between last year’s design and the iPad mini 4.
First, the mute switch is gone, giving the iPad mini 4 a profile that’s similar to the iPad Air 2. The leaked housing also features a single row of speaker holes on either side of the Lightning port, borrowing again from the larger Apple tablet. It’s unclear if this means the device will be any thinner, though that seems likely given the company’s recent trajectory.
Beyond its design, we’re also hoping for an upgraded processor for the iPad mini 4. Last year’s A8X chip is the obvious choice, though it’s possible Apple could jump straight to a new A9 instead.
Either way the iPad mini 4 could be a nice step up from last year’s model. Whether that’s enough to convince Apple fans to upgrade remains to be seen, though the company may also have something more exciting planned for its larger iPad.
