We had posted two days ago that @MuscleNerd had almost got the iPhone baseband downgrade tool ready. Although no dates were specified back then, it was expected very soon.
It now looks like the iPhone baseband downgrade will be ready for use by this Sunday (17th June).
The iPhone Baseband downgrade tool will benefit unlockers and jailbreakers largely. Even though unlocking is quite easy, it requires a particular baseband to work properly. In fact, if the baseband that the unlock supports does not match the baseband of your device, the unlock wont work at all.The baseband downgrade will let you change your iPhone’s present baseband (of 06.15.00) to any other of the choice: but MuscleNerd had already said that it would be a good idea to choose the 05.13.04 baseband which has unlock and GPS support.
The iPhone baseband downgrade will enable people to unlock their iPhones. With new plans and offers coming up almost on all carriers, it would be a great time to be able to use any SIM from any carrier on your iPhone.
The Other Side of Unlocking
There’s really only one disadvantage of unlocking your iPhone through software (as against a factory unlocked phone). It is in the fact that you cannot directly update to the latest iOS firmware when it arrives because jailbreakers will have to figure out a jailbreak for the new iOS before someone can create an unlock tool for that.
Other than this, a software unlock is as good as a factory unlock. Only, it voids your warranty – although technically, the government does not call that illegal at all.
