If you weren’t aware, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are available today. And they’re super easy to get, at least easier than any other year, if you pre-ordered or reserved one. Sure, there are still lines outside of Apple Store locations, but from my experience this morning, things are just running a lot smoother than they used to.
For one, I showed up at the Upper West Side Apple Store at 7:45 a.m. I had placed a reservation for an iPhone 6s Plus with 128GB of storage when Apple started accepting reservations, but my appointment wasn’t until 10:30 a.m. today. I figured I’d stop by and see if Apple could accommodate me earlier.
“Let’s make magic happen,” one employee said, ushering me right to a small line in front of the store. And no, he didn’t know I was with the press. I was just another customer.
Yes, there was a long line of people, some of whom had slept outside, but those folks were in a totally different line for people who didn’t place a reservation. I’m not sure why anyone didn’t just place a preorder this year. I suppose some people prefer the experience of camping out and waiting for something, even if it’s totally unnecessary.
The Apple Store I visited had plenty of stock, too. Another person I was in line with was torn between an iPhone 6s Plus in black, silver or rose gold. He had reserved the silver model, but Apple was able to accommodate him with a rose gold option. I’d bet many of the folks who were in the longer, unreserved line were able to get many of the models they wanted.
Of course, that’s just the retail experience of today. A lot of folks have their iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus units arriving in the mail, too. Again, totally alleviating any need to wait in line.
