Continuing on with Mobile Madness 2016, we have the the Apple iPhone 6S going up against the Microsoft Lumia 950. On paper and from afar, it is really hard to compare these two phones. Their operating systems and apps are quite different.
One knock that’s existed in the past is Windows Phone devices just don’t support enough apps. Microsoft will point to the majority of the largest apps are found on Windows Phone, however, you’ll still find it hard getting developers to bring over the “hottest” or newest apps to Windows Phone devices. The platform may eventually get there, especially with the Windows experience becoming more continuous across all devices, it just isn’t there yet. Lumia devices have always had a strong emphasis on photography hardware and software and the 950 does a decent job on that front too. There’s a lot to like about the platform, but there are also some things that will drive you nuts.
What can you say about iPhone 6S that hasn’t already been said? It takes great photos, it is thin, nicely designed and the OS brings the Apple experience together. Then again, that is the biggest knock against it. The fortified Apple wall is what makes the platform convenient, easy to use, but also a bit stifling.

pple doesn’t typically change up the hardware design — the actual look of the iPhone — when it makes the “toc” upgrades between major changes. Unless you own the new rose gold model, someone on the street isn’t going to be able to distinguish — by looking at the body alone — whether you have a 6 or a 6s… read more
I’ll let you in on a little secret. Before the Lumia 950 was announced, I had already told our president Jon Rettinger that it was one of the phones I was looking forward to most. I’ve been a big Windows fan ever since I first started getting interested in computers, and have tested the early versions of the desktop and mobile operating systems for much of my career. On paper, the Lumia 950 looked like it was going to start to solve all of Microsoft’s mobile troubles.
Windows 10 Mobile, the iteration of Windows 10 for smartphones, aims to address Microsoft’s app gap by allowing developers to easily port and scale Windows applications down to mobile displays. Additionally, Microsoft Conitnuum, on paper, seemed to me like a great way to actually get work done on my phone. I’ve always, always wanted a full PC that fits in my pocket, at least since the days when I was addicted to Ultima Online and wished that I could take the game with me anywhere. Continuum seems like the first step in that direction, and Microsoft is indeed promising that it’s a tool that will allow folks to work from anywhere…read more
