The makers of Blendr seemed to be troubled by the fact that existing social networking sites seemed to only be for people who already knew each other. So, Blendr was conceived as a ‘social’ social networking app – one that encourages strangers to meet up and get to know each other. You can make your own Blendr profile, stock it with your interests, and find nearby like-minded Blendr users. This is enabled through checking-in. You can see who’s checked-in where around your local area, and strike up a chat conversation with someone who has matching interests. You can also watch for trending hotspots, where Blendr users seem to be congregating en masse for whatever common interest they might hold. You can look through others’ profiles, and the app works with Facebook and Twitter – in fact, a Blendr app has already been made specifically for Facebook.
Blendr seems to be a well-organized, appealing way to actually meet new people using social networking, something that hasn’t really caught on yet. If it ever will catch on, this seems like the app to do it. Blendr is available now from the iTunes App Store for free.
