So much for Facebook Camera and Instagram – there’s a new contender that looks slick enough to blow by both. Camera Awesome is a photo taking, editing, and sharing app for iOS developed by SmugMug, a popular paid photo sharing site.
The options available pre-shot are pretty impressive by themselves, at least for a smartphone camera. Focus can be set and exposure can be adjusted with one touch. One touch will also make the image level with the horizon. The app is also constantly taking in images and temporarily storing them. In practice, that means the picture you take will be an image from up to five seconds in the past, in an attempt to correct for lag.
After the shot, Camera Awesome offers up an Awesomize button, which is much like the I’m Feeling Lucky button found in Picasa – it optimizes lighting and color. Photos can be shared with one touch to a number of photo sharing sites, including Facebook, Flickr, and SmugMug itself, or with zero touches – you can set the app to automatically upload images to those sites.
Finally, you can crop and rotate photos, then add one of 36 free presets, filters, textures, and frames. Aside from those, there are many more packs available for sale as in-app purchases. You’ll receive nine effects for $.99, and there are over 300 to choose from.
Camera Awesome is available now on the iTunes App Store for free.
