Big tank-on-tank battle, on a wee screen. Tank Battalion Blitz is a universal app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that lets you choose your personal tank and three support tanks for a Red versus Blue session. There are even a couple “tip ‘o the hat” elements for the Lego lovers and the old Pac Man crowd.
The graphics are clean and well detailed for the small screen; the game even leaves a set of tank tracks on the ground, which will fade after a few seconds so the screen doesn’t become a field of tread marks.
You can either navigate your way through the maze of obstacles or you can blow them up (always fun!). You and your pack get to go out and destroy the enemy tanks while protecting your base. There is no enemy base to destroy, just eliminate the aggressors.
How does it work?
Since this is a 2D tank fight, there are only two controls. The left thumb gets the direction, which you can set as the four way arrow buttons or “joystick” or “flick,” while the right thumb gets the Fire button. Yep, just point and shoot. Along the way, you can collect power ups in the form of floating cubes. Some of the bonuses include speeding up your tank, slowing down everything else, repairing your tank, adding three tanks to your team, etc.
There is a bit of start-up work to be done first, though. You have access to four “decks” or assortments of four tanks. You can customize each of the decks to fit the anticipated style of combat. The game uses real tank models from history, so you can have a Panzer and a Crusader on the same team, if you like. There are also “Gashapon” options the game will offer you. There is a once per day option that is a freebie (random, one tank offering) and an in game purchase option. The game presents the Gashapon as a gumball machine, just to keep it different (oooh, look, I got a bouncy ball and a Panzer!).
Another feature of TBT is you can play as you against the game or you can play other users by using the localcCo-op (reserved multiplayer “rooms”) or online co-op (web play, for which you will need a Game Center log-in).
Is it contagious?
Tank Battalion Blitz is a simple, but fun game with enough realism in regards to tank performance to appeal to anyone from the casual gamer to the history buff who wonders “what would happen if a King Tiger went up against a Panzer II?” Now you can find out.
Besides, it’s nice to see a battlefield where the only destruction is blown up pixel versions of tanks and buildings.
