DUBAI, UAE – Mobile Satellite Services operator Thuraya launched the Thuraya SatSleeve, that enables the Apple iPhone to connect via satellite.
The Thuraya SatSleeve is said to be versatile and user-friendly, although is a little bigger than the phone itself. It allows a user to turn their iPhone into a satellite phone, thus providing the option to connect from the most remote locations in the world with help of Thuraya’s satellite network.
The device is targeted towards the masses, including government and corporates enterprises, along with general consumers, like explorers, that work in remote locations.
Although at present, the Thuraya Satellite Network does not cover North and South America, the company has arranged roaming deals with the terrestrial network operators in the area.
The adapter consists of Satcom dock which helps it to transmit and receive the satellite signal to and from iPhone via Bluetooth.
The Thuraya SatSleeve currently supports iPhone 4 and 4S, however, a new version for the iPhone 5 will be released next month.
