Japan always gets the good stuff. Sony Mobile has announced that NTT docomo will be the exclusive Japanese carrier for the Xperia X Compact (SO-02J). The phone will launch with one major upgrade over the global version – it will be dust and water resistant, with an Ingress Protection rating of IP65/IP68.
The lack of water resistance was one of our key disappointments when the phone first launched. Many pointed to the fact that as the device was only meant to be the ‘compact’ version of the Xperia X, rather than XZ, water resistance was always off the cards. Well it looks like Sony is going through the effort of giving Japanese owners peace of mind with regards to water damage, but it didn’t feel the same was necessary for the rest of us.
Sony has been able to integrate water and dust resistance without any compromise to the dimensions (129 x 65 x 9.5mm) and weight (135 grams) which remain identically to the global model. Again, in light of this, we don’t understand why this was not the base model for all users globally.
Japan will also get a ‘Soft Pink’ colour option for the Xperia X Compact, which will sit alongside the other three colours (Mist Blue, Universe Black and White). We have already seen a ‘Deep Pink’ Xperia XZ launch across select territories, but up until now, there was no news on a pink Xperia X Compact. We hope to see this new colour option launch in other regions outside Japan over time.
Other specifications remain the same including a 4.6-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 650 chipset, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, microSD memory card support, 23MP rear camera with triple image sensing technology, 5.1MP front-facing camera and 2700mAh battery. NTT docomo’s Sony Xperia X Compact is due to launch in early November.
