Everyone has appointments and events that need to be remembered – whether it’s a case of remembering an appointment at the doctor, or that you need to pay a bill – and your Android device is a perfect tool for keeping track of things.
Whether you have a tablet or a phone, it’s likely that you have it with your most, if not all, of the time, and unlike a traditional paper diary, it’s something that you take care to ensure you don’t lose. Jorte Calendar is a powerful personal organizer app that replaces whatever stock calendar tool was provided with your device.
Let’s address the elephant in the room immediately: Jorte’s looks. There’s no getting away from the fact that this app is not the most attractive you’ll find on the Play Store. Looks may not be everything, but they do heavily influence first impressions, and in this respect Jorte does not get off to a good start.
In certain views, Jorte Calendar can start to look a little cluttered
Thankfully, however, it does not take long for things to improve. Just as one should never judge a book by its cover, apps should not be immediately dismissed because they are not traditionally beautiful. The idea behind Jorte’s look is to mimic the look and feel of an old fashioned personal organizer, but it does have a modern twist.
The app can be used in conjunction with Google Calendar, with its own internal calendar, or with both. Whichever option you choose, there are a number of different views to choose from to help make your data easier to see. Switching modes is very easy, and with so many views available there’s bound to be something that suits the way you work
There’s also a task manager that can be used to manage all sort of lists and memos, and this is a helpful addition to the calendar itself. It can be viewed alongside or below your calendar – depending on whether you are in landscape or portrait mode – and as well as viewing your todo list, you can also add items and tick them off when complete.
Viewing a monthly calendar and tasks is something better suited to tablets
You can neatly balance the amount of text you have displayed on screen at any one time and if you are using Jorte to set up a schedule that will be used by other people, one of the sharing options that’s available is to share an image of the current view.
A great deal of information is displayed when you switch to week view
One of the areas in which Jorte really shines is in its ease of use. Creating new events in your calendar just takes a tap, making it ideal for making quick notes whenever you need to.
Adding new appointments takes little more than clicking on the relevant day and time
Calendars Your Way
We’ve touched on the fact that Jorte isn’t the most visually appealing calendar available, but it is not a complete disaster. There is room for some customization and this, coupled with the large number of different views that are available, means that you should be able to tailor a look that you like.
The look of Jorte can be changed by adjusting color and font settings
Part of the point of any calendar is that it should not only provide you with the information you need at a glance, but also that it should be easily accessible. As well as directly accessing the app in the usual way, you can also take advantage of one of the many widgets that are available. These can be used to add everything from your tasks list to your complete month’s schedule to a home screen and, just as with the calendars in the main app, each widget can be customized so that the info is displayed the way you want.
A number of widgets are available so your calendar is always at hand
The value of the task and memo portion of Jorte cannot be overstated. Just as with calendar events, these can be easily created.
Task management in Jorte is simple yet effective
This is an app that is almost endlessly customizable and the way it works is wonderfully intuitive. There are some nice touches like support for Google Voice and importing and exporting options.
One of the benefits of using Google Calendar is that data can be synchronized between computers and devices, but even if you are only using Jorte’s own built in calendar some synchronization is possible. You can choose to sync your calendar with the Jorte servers so the same information can be made available to multiple devices.
Room For Improvement
Used on a phone, the interface can feel a little cramped in certain views, but this is not a problem for tablet users. The app is still easily one of the best calendars available if you are using a phone, but the extra screen space of a tablet goes a long way.
If you can turn a blind eye to the looks, Jorte Calendar is an app that you can very easily learn to love. It would be nice if it was possible to share individual calendar events with other people – particularly if you are collaborating on a project or just using a shared calendar at home – but this is really a minor complaint and is an omission that you’ll quickly learn to live with.
This leaves you with an impressive tool that highlights what you need to focus on and has a lovely retro feel.
