Lots of children all over Ireland and the world will have received an Android tablet for Christmas and some parents may be considering one for the kids this year as their first tablet. The problem is that unless you go for something like an InnoTab Max or Nabi 2 it can be very difficult to keep your kids safe while using them. Not many manufactures will bake in a kids area into their tablets with the exception of Samsung who do a very good one as it happens, but what about 95% of the other tablets, what should you use.
One brilliant app that I use for my kids is called Kids Place which will actually replace the normal Android UI that your tablet has and keep kids in this new safe zone. When you first install Kids Place you are asked to setup a pin number so that when you need to adjust some settings or add a ‘safe’ app you can, this also stops the little ones from changing things.
Once this is in place you are then told to select the Kids Place Launcher as the default, this basically means that Kids Place will launch from a fresh boot so that the child is always in the safe area. In the settings there are many options to ensure your child does not get to a place that they shouldn’t. For example you can disable all internet access, all incoming calls, you can check an option so that the child is returned to the app should an advert appear. For example, should your child’s ‘free’ app launch an advert that opens in the browser, it will not allow this as the browser is not in the safe list of apps.
Once ready you can then add all the apps and games you require as you can see below, I usually keep items such as Chrome, Email, and anything that would display adult orientated content out of the safe zone.
For those that are concerned their children might be on their tablet for too long you can also install the plugins to allow you to limit time to certain hours of the day and or certain days of the week. This is a very powerful and detailed process and one that you should take the time to learn.
Kids Place for me is the best app you can get right now on Android to keep the your kids safe, if you have tablets in your house I highly recommend you check it out, it’s completely free and thankfully devoid of any horrible adverts.
Of course, nothing keeps kids safe online more than parental guidance.
